演讲摘要:

Biomimetics that imitates the functionality of nature becomes increasingly important as it can give rise to a sustainable solution to environmental and energy challenges but also provide a new technology platform for artificial innovations that do not exist in nature. Biomimetic photonics is inspired by nature’s ability to self-assemble complex nanostructured materials with superior optical properties to that of conventional materials. Artificial construction of bio-inspired photonic devices ultimately requires three-dimensional 3D printing with nanometre resolution. In this presentation, we will present our new progress on developing bioinspired nanophotonic devices. First we will show the discovery of the circular birefringence in a 3D nanostructures inspired by butterfly wings (Callophrys rubi). More intriguingly, we will show these nano-engineered nanostructures can support the topologic state of light if the parity symmetry is broken. Second, we will present fractal micro-supercapacitors inspired by the internal structure of natural fern leaves (Polystichum munitum). These unprecedented 3D nanotechnology platforms allow for the accelerating development of biomimetic neural networks.
